CIT Woden
The landmark 22,500 square metre vocational education facility and public transport interchange includes smart classrooms and training facilities, revitalised green spaces, and a 'youth foyer' that can house and support vulnerable young people.
Yerrabingin engaged with Community members to gain a deeper understanding of the site and develop narratives to guide the design. The practice facilitated community and design team workshops and collaboration, and produced design reports to inform the built form and interiors.
The campus weaves connection to Country throughout. Spatial relationships, textures and colours evoke elements of Country, including the ridges of nearby Brinbabella ranges and their flora, the Yankee Hat Rock Art site, local river networks, and Sky Country. The facade design represents 'walking the ridgeline’. Interiors use colour coding on each level to mimic a journey from Deep Country to Sky Country, providing a calm atmosphere and assisting with wayfinding. On the top level, an oculus features the silhouette of a mulleun (wedge-tailed eagle).
Located in the heart of Woden, the new campus is a catalyst for urban renewal and sustainable economic growth. Embedding Country across the entire development connects the campus and the people who use it to place. It blends with the surrounding environment and creates a culturally safe place for First Nations people to gather, learn and share stories.
