Native Food Garden

477 Pitt Street Native Food Garden

Yerrabingin was engaged to lead the redesign of a garden terrace on the second level of a commercial building in Sydney's CBD. The client’s vision was to create an appealing break-out space incorporating native plants.

The design concept focused on merging Gadigal knowledge with contemporary design to create a native oasis within the city.

The planting scheme integrates 100 percent native plant species, of which 70 percent have edible or medicinal qualities. To minimise demolition, existing walls have been retained where possible, while seating is arranged to create gathering space for a range of activities and group sizes. Materials selection complements the existing building and the planting scheme to create a cohesive and engaging place.

The project has transformed a neglected terrace into an inviting and sensory-rich garden and outdoor space that supports multiple uses, expanding working space and enhancing health and wellbeing. Abundant native plants add biodiversity to the city and provide habitat and foraging opportunities for birds and insects.

Awarding the project the 2024 AILA National Award of Excellence for Small Projects, the jury commented: “As a whole, the project exemplifies ecological stewardship and community well-being and showcases innovative approaches to sustainability and cultural engagement.
