Native Rooftop Garden

South Eveleigh is an inner-city urban regeneration precinct that is a technology and innovation hub. Mirvac engaged Yerrabingin to transform an office building rooftop into the world’s first Indigenous rooftop farm for urban food production.

The vision was to celebrate the South Eveleigh site's rich Aboriginal culture and heritage and provide an engaging cultural experience for the wider community.

The 500-metre-square space was designed in collaboration with Community using principles of Indigenous knowledge, permaculture and Aboriginal environmental land management. It includes over 30 types of bush foods and over 2,000 edible, medicinal or cultural plants.

The exposed site required careful planning. Cells under the soil catch and hold rainwater, draining excess off the building to minimise excess weight. Iron tree trellises support plants to help attract birds and there are small green houses for propagation.

In the garden’s first four months of operation, Yerrabingin engaged 500 community members through over 70 educational events, and the project won the 2019 Sustainability Awards Public and Urban category.
